Welcome to Ride to Camp – Home of Grand American Camp-Touring

Hello, I’m David. Since 1970, I’ve found joy in motorcycling—exploring for adventure, sport, and a bit of escapism.

Ride to Camp (RTC) celebrates the timeless tradition of Grand American Touring and motorcycle camping, a uniquely American pastime. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to the world of camping on two wheels, RTC is here to inspire and guide you.

Honoring the Harley-Davidson Legacy of Touring and Motorcycle Camping

Harley-Davidson History of Motorcycle Camping
In “Camping Hints When Touring with a Motorcycle,” Theodore J. Werle covers all aspects of packing motorcycle camping gear necessary for long-distance touring.

In 1915, Harley-Davidson Motor Co. inspired a generation of adventurers with its brochure titled “Camping Hints When Touring with a Motorcycle.” This guide wasn’t just about logistics—it captured the essence of a burgeoning movement, encouraging riders to embrace the open road and the thrill of self-reliance.

The brochure showcased how motorcycling and camping could combine into a uniquely American pastime, guiding travelers to grand events like the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego and the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

At the time, motorcycles symbolized innovation and independence, and camping allowed riders to stretch their budgets while experiencing the country’s beauty firsthand. Riders would strap tents, cookware, and supplies to their bikes and venture into the unknown—seeking adventure, camaraderie, and a connection to nature.

Fast forward over a century, and the spirit of those early pioneers remains alive and well. Today, with modern motorcycles and advanced camping gear, we can experience the same sense of freedom, exploration, and simplicity that defined the early days of motorcycle touring.

I’m proud to carry on this legacy at Ride to Camp—combining the boundless freedom of motorcycling with the joys of outdoor living while embracing the traditions and values that make Grand American Touring on a Harley-Davidson a timeless pursuit.

Making Grand American Touring Affordable Again!

I want to inspire and empower riders to embrace affordable, healthy, sustainable, and safe motorcycle touring. I believe Grand American Touring doesn’t have to break the bank. Self-reliance and creativity can make every motorcycle camping trip unforgettable.

My mission is simple: to show that Grand American Touring is for every motorcycle owner—not just those who can afford the latest high-end, full-dresser Harley-Davidson, hotels, and fancy meals. Combining camping, cooking, and healthy activities makes Grand American Touring more accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable—not to mention better for your wallet and health.

What Makes RTC Unique

At Ride to Camp, I go beyond the ride. I want to make motorcycle camping accessible and sustainable for everyone by focusing on four key areas:

  • Affordable Touring Solutions
From DIY adaptations to budget-friendly moto camping gear, I share practical motorcycle camping tips to help you maximize your adventures without overspending.
  • Enjoying the Stay
It’s common for riders to see how far they can go on a journey. Unfortunately, they never stay in one place long enough to enjoy what the area offers. I introduce ideas on how to comfortably set up a base camp for 2-3 days to enjoy local riding and sightseeing.
  • Health of the Rider
Long-distance motorcycle touring can take a toll on your body. I offer advice on nutrition, fitness, and staying energized to ensure you’re ready for the road ahead.
  • Health of the Motorcycle
Regular maintenance and smart upgrades are the keys to keeping your bike running smoothly for every mile of your journey.

By blending the classic spirit of motorcycle camping with modern solutions, I help riders enhance every ride while staying true to the traditions that make it unique.
